What Is Myofascial Therapy?

Myofascial therapy focuses on the fascia—the connective tissue surrounding muscles—as well as related soft-tissue restrictions. Dr. Thomas Wiest may use myofascial release techniques as part of your individualized chiropractic care.

Your health history, symptoms, comfort, and movement goals guide the approach. Dr. Wiest will discuss whether this form of manual therapy is appropriate for you and adapt care to your needs.

Are You Living with Chronic Muscle Pain and Limited Mobility?

Persistent muscle pain and fascial restrictions can significantly impact your quality of life, making everyday movements uncomfortable and limiting your ability to participate in activities you enjoy. When soft tissue becomes tight and restricted, it creates a cycle of discomfort that can affect your sleep, work, and overall well-being.

Through careful assessment and personalized treatment using proven manual therapy methods, At New Journey Chiropractor and Wellness I can help address your specific soft tissue restrictions and guide you toward improved comfort and function.

Meet Your Chiropractor, Dr. Thomas Wiest

Your care is led by Dr. Thomas Wiest, DC, MSc, DIBCN, owner of New Journey Chiropractor and Wellness in Wilton Manors. Dr. Wiest graduated as valedictorian from Keiser University's College of Chiropractic Medicine and is a Diplomate of the International Academy of Chiropractic Neurology. He is also trained in Diversified and Cox flexion-distraction techniques.

His background includes a Veterans Affairs externship in preventive medicine and rehabilitation, along with more than a decade of U.S. Army service. That clinical training shapes how he approaches soft tissue care: every visit starts with an assessment, so your myofascial release targets what is actually driving your pain, and it can be combined with chiropractic care when that makes sense for you.

Conditions Myofascial Release May Help

Myofascial release may help when soft tissue tension is part of the picture. Common reasons patients in Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and Broward County come to see us include:

  • Myofascial pain syndrome and trigger points — localized knots and referred pain that do not ease with rest
  • Chronic neck, shoulder, and upper back tension — often tied to desk work, driving, and stress
  • Low back and hip tightness — soft tissue restrictions that often accompany back pain and disc problems
  • Tension-related headaches — tight muscles at the base of the skull and neck
  • Sports and overuse injuries — restricted movement and lingering soreness during recovery
  • Post-surgical stiffness — tissue tightness during recovery, once cleared by your surgeon (see our post-surgical pain care)

Not sure it is the right fit? Dr. Wiest will discuss whether myofascial therapy or another approach is appropriate after your assessment.

You Don't Need To Continue To Live In Pain

Release Chronic Pain Naturally: Myofascial release therapy provides a gentle, non-invasive approach to addressing myofascial pain syndrome and chronic muscle tension. Through sustained pressure on fascial trigger points and restricted areas, this manual therapy technique helps your body release long-held patterns of tension.

Restore Mobility and Flexibility: By targeting connective tissue restrictions, myofascial release techniques improve your range of motion and enhance overall body mechanics. This soft tissue mobilization approach makes daily activities easier and more comfortable.

Support Holistic Healing: Beyond immediate pain relief, myofascial therapy supports your body's natural healing processes. This comprehensive approach to soft tissue treatment addresses both physical symptoms and the underlying fascial restrictions contributing to dysfunction, promoting lasting improvements in comfort and function.

Myofascial Release FAQs

Myofascial therapy involves hands-on soft-tissue techniques selected after your assessment. Dr. Wiest may apply gentle, sustained pressure to areas of restriction, adjusting the approach to your comfort and goals as part of your chiropractic care.

The pressure is gentle and sustained rather than aggressive. You may feel stretching or tenderness in restricted areas, and some patients notice mild soreness for a day afterward. Tell Dr. Wiest if anything feels like too much, and he will adjust the technique and pressure right away.

It depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and how your body responds. Some patients feel a difference after the first visit, while others benefit from a series of sessions. Dr. Wiest will give you a recommendation after your initial assessment.

It is appropriate for many people, but not for every situation. Dr. Wiest reviews your health history and current symptoms first to confirm that myofascial release is a good fit, and he will recommend a different approach if it is not.

Yes. Many patients pair soft tissue work with chiropractic care or medical massage, and Dr. Wiest can build a combined plan around your goals.
